The programme ‚Urban Climate Under Change - [UC]²‘ aims at the development, validation and application of building-resolving urban climate models for entire cities. Hence, interdisciplinary analysis can be done and measures for securing and improving urban climate as well as air pollution prevention can be planned. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research funds the programme as ‚Research for Sustainable Development (FONA)‘; www.fona.de (funding code: 01LP1602A). The German Aerospace Center (DLR) Project Management Agency is providing the programme ‚Urban Climate Under Change‘. The programme started on 1st of June 2016 with a duration of three years.

It is structured into three modules: model development (A), observational data (B) and practicability for climate change adequate urban development (C). Prof. Dieter Scherer, head of the Chair of Climatology, Technische Universität Berlin, is responsible for the coordination of the joint research project ‚Three-Dimensional Observation of Atmospheric Processes in Cities - (3DO)‘ in Module B. 3DO consists of 20 partners organised in 14 subprojects.

Comprehensive weather as well as climate and air quality data sets for cities are still only to a limited extent available, especially multi-annual or –decadal atmospheric long-term observation data (LTO). Therefore the subprojects of 3DO will process already existing LTO data and will measure meteorological and air quality data with new long-term observations and intense observation periods (IOP) in Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart. High-resolution and high-accuracy instrumentation will allow the collection of a multitude of three-dimensional atmospheric data sets, which can be used directly for validation of the developed urban climate model, but also for specific applications in urban planning and air quality control.

For this purpose, new concepts and analysis tools will be developed, tested and implemented in a data-warehouse for general use in the entire programme. Model validation and application tests shall be performed together with the partners of Module A and C.
