Subproject 14: Evaluation of urban climate models by satellite- and aircraft-based measurements

In subproject 14 (TP 14) satellite- and aircraft-based measurements will be procured, performed and analysed to investigate meteorological parameters and air pollutants in the cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart. The spatial and temporal variability of these parameters will be examined horizontally and vertically by a combination of satellite and airborne measurements.

New long-term measurements (LTO) of particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide will be gained at highest resolution possible. Further, a feasibility study shall be performed using WorldView-3 to retrieve aerosols at a spatial resolution up to 4x4 m. To deliver further LTO data of atmospheric composition, data from well-proven instruments like SCIAMACHY (nitrogen dioxid) and MODIS (aerosols) will be provided. During intense observation periods (IOP), the satellite LTOs will be complemented by airborne measurements in order to gain vertically and horizontally highly resolved data.

TP 14 will develop an innovative method to merge satellite data with airborne measurements. The combined data set will be provided for model evaluation and further scientific studies and application tests. In particular, it will be used to investigate urban climates, air pollution trends and emission activity cycles.

Data sets from LTOs and intensive observation periods (IOP) deliver independent information for model validation and will be also used for comparison with ground-based data available within module B. TP 14 will contribute to development and testing of concepts, analysis tools and the data-warehouse. In particular, it will include the design of a specific flight concept which will enable a thorough validation of urban climate models.
