Subproject 3: Monitoring, measurement and analysis of high-resolved spatio-temporal temperature and relative humidity in 2 m height in Berlin

Subproject 3 (TP 3) aims at measuring temperature and humidity in 2 m height in Berlin to:

1) Generate a comprehensive urban climate analysis for Berlin:
Berlin will be classified into different Local Climate Zones (LCZ) based on physical properties of buildings and land cover with regard to temperature. The network of urban Automatic Weather Stations of the Freie Universität Berlin will be expanded by identifying ideal spots to measure representative local climate signals. This classification will also be used for model validation. The method identifies the hot and cool spots of Berlin, where TP 3 will measure intensively with additional mobile instruments and during intense observation periods (IOP). TP 3 contributes to the ceilometer-network Berlin. This way a homogeneous urban observational data set will be produced to be used by Module B and C.

2) Validate the urban climate model to be developed by Module A for Berlin:
Developing and testing a concept to evaluate the ability of the urban climate model to simulate the spatio-temporal distribution of temperature and humidity, Park Cool Islands, shape and magnitude of Urban Heat Island in calm and clear nights, ventilation in courtyards and diurnal range of temperature. TP 3 takes part in developing and testing a concept for evaluating the ability of the model to simulate temperature and humidity. Additional mobile measurements in some grid boxes (10x10 m) with different mixed land covers/built-up types will be carried out to validate the urban climate model at microscale.

The new concepts and data sets will be implemented in the data management system.
