'Urban Climate under Change - [UC]²' lasts another three years from
01.10.2019 to 31.09.2022. The urban climate model PALM-4U developed
in the last three years is to be further developed for municipalities and other practical
partners as well as for scientific research. The German Federal Ministry of Education and
is funding this project / initiative within the framework of the Strategy 'Research for Sustainability' (FONA).
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) Project Management Agency is
providing the programme 'Urban Climate Under Change'. Module B of the programme
consists of the joint research project
Three-Dimensional Observation and Modelling of atmospheric processes in cities (3DO+M).
Sub-project 1, Module B as well as the whole programme are co-ordinated by Prof. Dieter Scherer.
Sub-project 1 is leading the cross-module working groups Data Management and Model Evaluation.
It will also develop the 'Berlin data portal' which will provide observation data
from Berlin, input data for PALM-4U as well as freely usable tools (e.g. for visualisation
and evaluation of the data) for public use in the long term.
Long-term observations are continued with the
(Urban Climate Observation Network – UCON)
and will deliver further data for the evaluation of PALM-4U. The sub-project will perform
sensitivity studies using PALM-4U simulations and carry out application-specific model evaluation
using the example of internal variability of heat stress risks. By means of summer and winter
real case simulations with PALM-4U for Berlin and its surroundings urban-regional processes,
inner-city and microscale variations of atmospheric phenomena and processes in the planetary
boundary layer will be investigated. In co-operation with the Humboldt and the Freie Universität
of Berlin TP1 develops a concept for a one-year study course, thereby contributing to user
qualification in Model C. Together with Module A an international comparison of various urban
climate models is planned.
