Kick-off 2017: Fixed wings and multicopters above Berlin and Stuttgart

3DO started first measurement flights (IOP 2)

In January and February, 3DO operated the first intensive winter observation period (IOP) in the cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart. Overall, four IOPs are planned during summer and winter to acquire a multitude of high-resolution three-dimensional atmospheric data sets in cities. These data sets are required to test and assess the performance of the new urban climate model, which is under development in Module A. The data sets are also applicable in urban planning and air quality control. Therefore 3DO research partners conducted stationary and mobile measurements of meteorological parameters and air pollutants during IOP 1.

Measurement flights with unmanned aerial vehicles in Berlin and Stuttgart were part of the IOP I. Research partners of the University of Augsburg and Leibniz Universität Hannover sent up their fixed wings and multicopters to measure air temperature, humidity and wind up to 250 m maximum height. Another focus of the campaigns were air pollutants. Research partners in Hamburg were concentrating on small-scale variability of the wind field in urban areas taking measurements at various sites around the HafenCity University.
